Free public discussion on the threats to press freedom

Bloomberg News April 29, 2014

The Committee to Protect Journalists and Bloomberg News hosted a free public discussion on the threats to press freedom posed by the Obama administration’s aggressive war on leaks and the National Security Agency’s mass surveillance.

The discussion came on the heels of the Committee to Protect Journalists’ comprehensive annual assessment “Attacks on the Press,” which describes the threats to press freedom and explores strategies to safeguard the free flow information around the world. The discussion examined how the U.S. government’s aggressive war on leaks and digital surveillance poses a global challenge for the free flow of news.

The panelists included former Washington Post Executive Editor Leonard Downie Jr., Weil Family Professor of Journalism at the Cronkite School, and Geoffrey King, CPJ Internet advocacy coordinator. The event was moderated by Bloomberg News reporter Jennifer Oldham.
